Healthy Living 30 Day Challenge – Day 15 – Exercise Your Brain
Welcome to Day 15 of my Healthy Living 30 Day Challenge, created to support my Yoganudge Facebook group.
If you’re a member of my Facebook group, I hope you downloaded my self-study tutorial 21 Days of Yoga (which is free for my FB group members) and have started a regular yoga practice in the comfort of your own home.
Here’s today’s tip for this challenge:
Besides exercising your body regularly, it's a good idea to exercise your mind every day.
Here are a few ways to do that.
1. Work a puzzle.
Some people love to do a crossword puzzle every morning, and that’s a healthy habit to get into. Sudoku puzzles are also very popular these days.
You can also start a jigsaw puzzle and put together several parts of it each day until you complete the entire puzzle. Set up a card table in a corner of your bedroom or family room, or use your dining room table, and always have a jigsaw puzzle in the works.
2. Watch game shows on television.
Many older people love to watch game shows on television when they are confined to their home, or it’s difficult for them to get out much. And watching these shows is a healthy habit for people of any age because playing along with these shows engages the mind.
Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are some good shows to watch for this purpose (or play the board game at home, see next tip).
3. Play a game at home.
If you don’t care for puzzles or game shows on television, try playing a game at home.
In fact, make this a daily activity.
My husband and I started playing a game called Rummikub every afternoon several years ago. We still play from time to time, but now we tend to play Dominoes and cards each day.
Many people love Scrabble, and I know a few people who keep a Scrabble game going on their dining room table all the time.
4. Write a story.
Writing fiction engages the brain in a creative way. And many grandparents decide they want to write stories for their grandchildren, which is a wonderful, fun way to exercise the brain.
Here’s a good resource if you want to try writing children’s stories. It’s called How to Write a Children’s Book in 14 Days.
5. Learn to Tangle.
Tangle is often called Zentangle and it is the practice of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. The patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper or cardstock, called tiles.
It’s fun to create your own tangle patterns and it can be quite addictive.
These are just a few ways to exercise your mind.
There are lots of other ways.
The point is, choose at least one way to exercise your brain and do it regularly.
Try it!

Suduko on my phone is my go to mind exerciser. Everything else falls away as I concentrate on working each puzzle.
Sandra,
You’re really good with all the technology – the FitBit, the phone apps, etc. Good for you! Wish I were better.

I have been doing the 2 days of Yoga! I play words with Friends. Watch Wheel of Fortune. Write stories. Walk and dance.
Hi, Mardi,
Glad to hear you’ve been doing the yoga. I love yoga, even though I’m not that good at it. And, of course, I write stories.
Thanks for checking in here with a comment.
